The resume most people never see get rejected

A large share of resumes today are screened by software (an Applicant Tracking System, or ATS) before a human ever opens them — and formatting choices that look fine to a person can make a resume unreadable to that software. Tables, text boxes, headers/footers, and multi-column layouts are the most common silent killers: a human sees a clean two-column resume, but the ATS can read the columns in the wrong order or skip them entirely, scrambling your work history or dropping it altogether.

What actually gets through: a single-column layout, standard section headings (“Experience,” “Education,” not creative alternatives), and text that's actually text — not text embedded in an image or graphic.

The other quiet mistake: writing duties instead of outcomes

“Responsible for managing a team” describes a duty. “Managed a team of 6, cutting onboarding time by 30%” describes an outcome — and it's the second one that actually gets remembered, whether by software matching keywords or a person skimming fast. If a line on your resume could apply to anyone who held that job title, it's not doing any work for you specifically.

What makes a resume ATS-friendly

Standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills) rather than creative renaming.
Reverse-chronological order, so your most recent role is first.
Plain, single-column text for anything an ATS needs to parse — the Compact template's sidebar is easiest to read for a human, but if you're applying somewhere with strict automated screening, Traditional or Modern is the safer bet.
Keywords from the job description worked naturally into your summary and bullet points.
A DOCX or plain-text file rather than a scanned image or heavily designed PDF.
Template choice matters here too: Traditional and Modern are both single-column and parse cleanly; Compact’s sidebar layout reads great to a human but is the one most likely to confuse strict automated parsing, so lean Traditional or Modern if you know the employer screens with an ATS.
That’s also why this tool only exports DOCX, not PDF — a DOCX generally parses more reliably across ATS systems than a designed PDF, so it’s a deliberate choice here, not a missing feature.

Common resume mistakes

An objective statement instead of a summary — say what you offer, not what you want.
Unexplained employment gaps — a one-line note is usually enough.
Dense paragraphs instead of scannable bullet points.
Inconsistent date formats between entries.
Bullets that describe duties instead of results — where you can, say what changed because you did the work.
