What makes a fantasy name feel right

Names that feel “elvish” tend to lean on flowing vowels and soft consonants (l, n, th). “Dwarvish” names lean guttural and consonant-heavy (k, g, th, dr). “Orcish” names often use harsh, short syllables. If a generated name doesn't feel right for your character, try regenerating within the same race — the patterns are consistent even when individual names miss.

How the names are built

First names are made by joining a start and an ending, like Bran + wyn (Branwyn) for a human or Thor + din (Thordin) for a dwarf. Last names join two words, like Iron + beard (Ironbeard) or Silver + leaf (Silverleaf). Each race has its own set of pieces, which is why elf names read softer and orc names harder. Every batch has 10 names with no repeats inside it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I generate a fantasy last name?

Choose a race, then select Last, or choose "Fantasy Surname (any race)". Last names join two words, like Ironbeard or Silverleaf.

What’s different about the any-race surname option?

Each race uses word sets that fit it. Dwarves lean on words like Iron, Stone and Forge, and elves on Moon, Star and Leaf. The any-race option uses a general set (Oak, Silver, Storm, Dawn, Thorn and so on).

How many names do I get, and can I keep them?

You get 10 per click. Use Regenerate for a new batch, and Copy all or copy one. The last 3 batches stay under History until you leave or reload the page. Nothing is saved.

How many different names are there?

Each race has 16 starts and 16 endings for first names, and 16 × 16 word pairs for last names, so 65,536 possible full names per race.

Can I choose male or female names, or name length?

No. The generator has no gender or length options, and names aren’t built as male or female, so any result can suit any character.

Can I use the names in a game or story?

Yes, that’s what they’re for. Names are random combinations of short pieces, so one may match an existing character or product. Do a quick search before using it for anything you plan to publish or sell.
