What is DPI, and why does it matter for AI art?

DPI (dots per inch) is how many pixels of your image get packed into each inch of the physical print. The same image file can look razor-sharp at one size and soft or blurry at another — nothing about the file changes, only how much it's being stretched. A photo taken with a 20-megapixel camera has huge pixel dimensions to work with, so it can print large and still stay sharp.

AI-generated images work differently. A generator hands you a fixed pixel size — often 1024×1024 or similar — regardless of how detailed the image looks on screen. That fixed size is the ceiling on how big you can print before quality drops, which is exactly why a DPI check matters more here than it does for a regular photo: the "print bigger and hope" instinct that works with camera photos doesn't work the same way with AI output.

Reading the quality badges

  • Excellent (300+ DPI) — true photo-print quality, sharp even held up close. The standard for framed wall art and fine art prints.
  • Good (200–299 DPI) — looks sharp at normal viewing distance (arm's length or more). Fine for most everyday prints.
  • Fair (150–199 DPI) — holds up for anything viewed from a bit of distance, like a large poster or canvas on a wall, but starts to soften if you look closely.
  • Poor (under 150 DPI) — visibly soft or blurry at that size. Either size down, or upscale the image first before printing.

Why merch gets more leeway than wall art

The same pixel count that reads as "Poor" on a framed 16×20 print can look completely fine on a coffee mug or t-shirt. Fabric weave, ceramic curvature, and the fact that nobody inspects a mug from six inches away all hide softness that would be obvious on flat, close-up wall art. That's why the merch table above uses a more forgiving read on the same badges — most print-on-demand suppliers treat 150 DPI and up as sellable on these products, even though that same number would be a clear "size it down" signal for a photo print.

If your image comes up short

Two options: pick a smaller size from the tables above where the DPI lands in Good/Excellent territory, or upscale the image first. AI upscaling tools (Topaz Gigapixel, or the hi-res-fix/upscale step built into most generators) can multiply pixel dimensions with surprisingly little quality loss — often enough to turn a "Poor" result into a "Good" one at the size you actually want.
