Which format should you actually use?

PNG — best for logos, screenshots, graphics with transparency, or anything with sharp edges and text. Lossless, but large.

JPG — best for photos. Lossy compression that photos hide well (smooth gradients mask compression artifacts), but text and sharp lines look blurry or blocky.

WebP — usually the best of both: supports transparency like PNG, compresses like JPG, and produces files 25–35% smaller than PNG at equivalent quality. The tradeoff is it's a newer format — very well supported now, but check compatibility if you're working with older systems or specific software requirements.

Rule of thumb: if the image has text, logos, or hard edges, start with PNG or WebP. If it's a photo, JPG or WebP. If file size matters and you don't need legacy compatibility, WebP wins most comparisons.
